What to see and do

The Tomintoul area is a beautiful, peaceful place to stay with unspoilt rolling countryside, pine forests, lochs, rivers, spectacular mountains, unique flora and fauna. You may spot a Deer, Highland Cattle grazing in the fields, Red Squirrel or even a Capercaillie. The stars are spectacular on a clear night and if you stay in December you may even witness the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

 

Horse riding   See this beautiful area from horseback with qualified instructors. Trekking and lessons available just a short walk from Livet Cottage (01807 580210)

 

Stained Glass Making   Visit A'anside Studios and Gallery where short courses in stained glass making with a qualified tutor are always available

 

Fishing   Fishing permits for the River Avon are available from the Tomintoul Post Office and the Glenavon Hotel (Salmon & Sea Trout). Loch fishing for Rainbow trout at Inverlochy is available. Brown trout fishing (no permit required) on the Conglass

 

Golf   Dufftown Golf Club is an 18 hole course set amongst the most breathtaking scenery in Speyside, the heart of the malt whisky country. Visitors return regularly to enjoy golf in this beautiful Banffshire setting where two of the holes (7th & 10th) feature in "Britain's 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes" by Geoff Harvey and Vanessa Strowger. Other courses are available at  Grantown on Spey, Nethy Bridge and Ballindalloch.

 

Skiing   Skiing, and a range of other activities when there is no snow is available at the  Lecht(10 mins.) & Cairngorm Mountain(40mins.)

 

Water sport   Water sports and other outdoor activities are available at Rothiemurchus near Aviemore.

 

Gliding   Feshiebridge near Aviemore & Aboyne.

 

Birdwatching   All year round locally. The Crown Estate has produced a bird list which is available here

 

Ranger Safaris   There are 4x4 and walking safaris to view the magnificent scenery and the wildlife off the beaten track. Visit reindeer, wild boar, fallow deer and Soay sheep, red deer and water buffalo on foot around a remote Glenlivet farm. July & August.

Wildlife Watching in Glenlivet: Glenlivet's remote and unspoiled landscapes are an ideal location for discovering Scottish Highland Wildlife. Our diverse habitats are easily accessible from a network of over one hundred miles of waymarked paths. Many of our species can be seen from a number of wildlife hides provided by The Crown Estate.

Dell Glenlivet: Situated on a well planned 50 acre wooded area, The Dell Glenlivet Clay Pigeon Shoot offers a wide range of shooting positions and targets to suit both novice and experienced shooters.(Dell Farm 01807 590227) and Aviemore

 

Adventure Playground   Located at the South end of village near Glenlivet Estate Office

 

Canoeing   The River A'an is suitable during moderate to high water Mostly Grade1/2 Grade 3/4 in places

 

Whisky Trail   On the whisky trail of Speyside, you’ll find more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries, each with its own warm welcome and an invitation to see, smell, taste and absorb the magic of whisky.

 

Castle Trail   Step back in time through the last millennium of our country's heritage on Scotland's only Castle Trail. A selection of eleven of the world's most unique Scottish castles ranging from the fairy tale magic of Craigievar, to the rugged splendour of Kildrummy Castle ruins, to the elegant timelessness of the country house grandeur of Leith Hall.
